Представляет собой электромагнит, который при возникновении сверхтока воздействует на устройство, удерживающее главные контакты, что приводит к их размыканию. Время реакции очень мало (сотые доли секунды). В регулируемых расцепителях имеется возможность регулировать ток срабатывания в широком (до 10 раз) диапазоне, что позволяет легко настроить автоматический выключатель под конкретные требования защиты. Кроме того, такую регулировку можно использовать для обеспечения селективности срабатывания автоматических выключателей.
